Become a Dark Sky Partner
The success of our mission would not be possible without the help of dedicated individuals, businesses and organizations who have committed their time to protect our night sky.
What Does it Mean to be a Partner?
As a partner to the North Fork Dark Sky Coalition, your business, organization or person are essential to the success of this mission. Partners directly promote dark sky initiatives by educating their neighbors, friends, constituents and colleagues about light pollution and current prevention strategies. Partners take personal action on their property to prevent light pollution and uphold the lighting regulations in Southold Town’s Exterior Lighting Code. Most importantly, Dark Sky Partners advocate for the preservation of a dark night sky. Together, these efforts will help us chart a course for a future where we can always experience the wonder of a starlit night.
Where do I start
The Starting Point.
Visit our website, take the pledge, learn more about light pollution and share your knowledge and our website with your friends, neighbors, colleagues and family. Help raise awareness.
Make Personal Changes.
Evaluate your outdoor lighting and make sure it is compliant with Chapter 172 of the Southold Town Code. Consider going above and beyond and replace your light fixtures IDA approved dark sky lighting, or get into the habit of turning off your outdoor lighting. Encourage your constituents to do the same.
Find Your Dark Sky Voice.
Talk to your colleagues, share your knowledge with your friends, write a letter to the editor, speak out at a town board meeting. Raising your voice helps to drive policy and action on dark sky related issues within the community. So if you are passionate about an issue, do not be afraid to speak out!
Rise to the Occasion.
There will be opportunities when the coalition needs additional support or volunteers to make our mission a success. We ask that our partners volunteer some of their time to help us further our efforts to protect our sky.
Tell Us What You Think.
As a local coalition, we appreciate and value the input of our partners, and we welcome your comments, questions and suggestions. If you (or your organization) have questions, suggestions or special talents to offer the coalition, please let us know by sending an email to northforkdarksky@gmail.com, and we will reply to your email as soon as we can.
