What We Do

“Only in the darkness can you see the stars ”

- Martin Luther King Jr.

Our Mission

The North Fork Dark Sky Coalition is an alliance between local community groups, civic organizations, and businesses dedicated to protecting and preserving North Fork’s night sky from the widespread effects of light pollution. We educate the public on the benefits of a dark sky, provide opportunities for them to enjoy the stars, and help them take action to prevent light pollution.

What We’re Doing

  • Supported the Southold Town Board in passing a resolution to honor International Dark Sky Week 2021 and utilize public channel 22 to provide education on light pollution.

  • Funded and designed an every-door-direct mail card to provide Southold Town residents with simple tips to reduce light pollution and inform them of current town regulations.

  • Worked with local code enforcement officers to develop a strategy to decrease the number of lighting code violations within Southold Town.

  • Created an informational hand out for Southold Town Building Department to inform contractors of current outdoor lighting regulations preventing new violations.

  • Provided over three years of dark sky educational events and star gazing outings.

  • Check out #NorthForkDarkSky on social media to learn about light pollution, its effects, and how to combat it. Use #NorthForkDarkSky to share your favorite night sky photos, or how you are combating light pollution.

  • Take the North Fork Dark Sky Pledge to take action against light pollution!
