What We Do

“Only in the darkness can you see the stars ”

- Martin Luther King Jr.

Our Mission

The North Fork Dark Sky Coalition is an alliance between local community groups, civic organizations, and businesses dedicated to protecting and preserving North Fork’s night sky from the widespread effects of light pollution. We educate the public on the benefits of a dark sky, provide opportunities for them to enjoy the stars, and help them take action to prevent light pollution.

What We’re Doing

  • Southold Town passed a resolution to honor International Dark Sky Week 2021 and utilize channel 22 to provide publicly accessible education about light pollution.

  • Created and funded every-door-direct mailing card to provide Southold Town residents with simple tips to reduce light pollution and inform them of current town wide regulations.

  • Worked with local code enforcement officers to develop a strategy to decrease the number of lighting code violations within Southold Town.

  • Provided over three years of dark sky education events and star gazing outings.

  • Check out #NorthForkDarkSky on social media to learn about light pollution, its effects, and how to combat it. Use #NorthForkDarkSky to share your favorite night sky photos, or how you are combating light pollution.

  • Take the North Fork Dark Sky Pledge to take action against light pollution!
