Protecting the Night Sky

Starts With You

Small steps taken together have the potential to change the world.

You might be asking why focus on light pollution while there are thousands of other environmental issues out there – but here’s why. The North Fork is a magical place, close enough to urban luxuries for us to feel connected to civilization yet far enough away to reap the many benefits of rural living. One of those awe-inspiring benefits is a night sky that is so clear many of us can see the Milky Way Galaxy right in our backyard. Light pollution not only disrupts our view of this natural wonder, but it can also have many adverse ecological and human health effects (see International Dark Skies for more information). If these issues were not enough, approximately 15 million tons of carbon dioxide are emitted annually to power residential outdoor lighting in the United States alone. Talk about contributing to climate change!

This information may seem daunting – who knew lights could be so bad? But there is some good news; light pollution is easy to tackle – all you need to do is turn off your lights – and with that, we are making progress! So turn off your lights, spread the word, join our movement, and together we will make a difference!

Join our movement by taking the pledge or becoming a partner (above). Take the pledge yourself, ask your friends, neighbors, co-workers, families to take it as well; before long, we will have built an entire movement, and that will make a difference.

Together we can reach for the stars!
